Literature Review Public defenders are put at a major disadvantage in terms of the effectiveness of defense they can provide. Most defenders will try to defend their clients to the best of their ability, but there are so many obstacles that prevent this from happening. These obstacles include heavy caseloads, lack of resources, government restriction, and the type of client they have to defend. While not all of these problems have a simple solution there must be some remedy to the issues. By not being able to provide a proper defense it directly violates proper due process. Caseloads and Resources For starters, two major issues that hinder the effectiveness of public defenders are heavy caseloads and a lack of useable resources. These excessive caseloads are much more detrimental than they sound. A lot of work is common for attorneys but a public defender must take on much more than they should and this causes some cases to be neglected. According to Woods (2014), that one lawyer in a certain county in Washington could spend approximately fourteen hours on a case while in a neighboring county the same lawyer could only spend 3 hours on a case. These numbers vary from county to county depending on the amount of convictions that are processed. Public defenders also have the responsibility of training young lawyers, visiting clients, and conducting daily life all with the pressure of these many cases as well (Newton, 2009). Having to develop self-awareness, I am able to change the interpretations in my mind and thus allowing me to change my emotions. This is important because I feel that it is self-awareness that can allow me to be aware of where my thoughts and emotions are actually taking me. Relationships are easy until there is emotional turmoil. This is similar whether one is at work or in his/her personal life. I feel that when one can master to change the interpretation in his/her own mind of emotions will effect on the emotional quality of the relationship. When one can change the emotions in his/her relationship, then new possibilities are opened up entirely in his/her life. From lesson 1, I have learnt that self-awareness is developed through practices in focusing your attention on the details of your personality and behavior. It isn’t learned from reading a book. It is just like when we read a book, we are focusing all of our attention on the conceptual ideas in the book. With our attention focused in a book, one is actually only practicing but not paying attention to his/her own behavior, emotions and personality.
